Sophie Blackall is the artist behind Missed Connections, a series of illustrative interpretations of missed connections ads. I love the way she interprets these often bizarre attempts to reconnect with a random stranger. The collection is available in book form, too. The artist was honored last year to design a poster for the New York MTA.

I was blown away as soon as I laid eyes on this clever project by Mie Frey Damgaard and Peter Ørntoft. Paint color preference by room was visualized as physical pie charts, cleverly painted in a dimensional scene to appear 2d, but accompanied by the subtle depth of natural shadows. This data visualization is the result of colour statistics extracted from Pinterest, a content sharing platform effecting millions of consumers' decoration decisions. Created for the paint brand Jotun.

The artist collaborative Nerhol photographed the same subject over three minutes of "sitting still," and constructed a new topographic image by layering, cutting and revealing the subject's subtle motion. The artists essentially captured a three-dimensional subject using a two-dimensional process, and deconstructed/reconstructed a new three-dimensional reality, representing time as both static and dynamic. John Baker and Juli Daoust, owners of Toronto-based Mjölk, could have slapped some black paint on a sandwich board and called it a day. Instead, and as with the lovely products sold in their design shop, attention was paid to the details. Charred wood and copper hinges elevate what could have been an ordinary sign to an object worthy of appreciation. This an inspirational project for me, because no detail is too small. Happy Friday!

National Geographic Channel have created a real-life version of the animated film Up — launching a house thousands of metres into the air using 300 helium weather balloons. A team of scientists, engineers, and two world-class balloon pilots successfully launched a 16' X 16' house 18' tall with 8' colored weather balloons from a private airfield east of Los Angeles, and set a new world record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted.
